A Sensory Ecstasy

The conception of Grand Wailea is entirely shaped based on the culture of Hawaii and the surrounding nature of the island of Maui. Originated from the brilliant Japanese developed Takeshi Sekiguchi, the hotel is a true manifestation of his vision on building the world's first "art museum". From the mermaid statue in front of the entrance of the resort, to the glamorous art exhibition of original paintings, sculptures, murals and artifacts. The hotel takes artistic inspirations from cultures all over the world with an elegant architectural style that blends classical French, Italian and Japanese with modern luxury. More than mere artistic exhibition and design, the atmosphere of the resort gives guests an immersive living experience by brilliantly integrating art into its surrounding areas including nature and every part of the daily activities. For example, the designers embraces nature's sunshine and shadows throughout the day and applied the concept to the textures and colors of the guest rooms, rendering peace, balance and harmony into the living space. Furthermore, river rocks from Kyoto, Japan and stone slabs from Mount Fuji add a sense of tranquility with the sounds of water and ocean around the living space.

Maintaining the central Hawaiian spirit while embracing the genius of art from all over the world, Grand Wailea invites its guests and visitors to appreciate the beauty in the diversity of art, culture, history and storytelling from all over the world. The resort itself is an artistic extravaganza. Every statue tells a unique history of itself and every art pieces blends perfectly with the land, rock, water and space.

"In vain will Egypt come before you with the arcane pyramids and the miraculous temples of Tentlra and Luxor; in vain will India show her stupendous constructions and aerial pagodas; in vain will Persia boast the palaces, which through a thousand traceries give rise to the coolness and smell of flowers if you repeat, 'This is not my type, therefore it is not beautiful,'" — Storia Universale

Outside at the entrance of the Grand Wailea is one of only five major statues of King Kamehameha who unified Hawaii and created the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1810. Entering into one of the hotel's formal dining room, one can see a large statue of the demigod Maui, holding up the sun with his right arm. It tells the story of the demi-god Maui slowing the sun for his mother so that she could get more work done while it was still light. The status is positioned so that the rays of the sun on the vernal equinox pass directly through the fiery circle of the statue, creating a natural lighting in the room. Stepping inside the NaPua Gallery, the first sight that captures your senses is Dale Chihuly’s Ocean Waves, a135-pieces of hand-blown multi-colored glass hanging upon the ceiling, representing the oceans of the world. The gallery has a library room where art enthusiasts can relax and peruse a wide collection of art books.
